Mom's visit
The weekend after my boyfriend visited, my mom came out for the annual Stitches West knitting convention. Since she was here for a few days we tried to squeeze in some sightseeing. The weather was gorgeous, so we took one day to drive across the Golden Gate and explore the city. Here are a couple of pictures from near the Golden Gate...
In this picture, you can see Alcatraz Island, with the Bay Bridge behind it and Oakland in the distance across the bay.
This is a shot of San Francisco through the Golden Gate.
We drove across the Golden Gate and ended up in the Presidio and the Marina District where we toured the Palace of Fine Arts and played in the Exploratorium. The Palace of Fine Arts is absolutely gorgeous...you can easily forget you are in San Francisco when you walk through it. The Exploratorium is awesome - I highly recommend it to anyone visiting.

After a while in the Presidio, we headed over to the Mission district for dinner. We bided our time and then headed back to the Pacific Heights area for the San Francisco Ghost Hunt at the Queen Anne Hotel (originally the Girls Friendly Society Lodge, as pictured below - please ignore the glare from the Chandelier).
The Ghost Hunt was a lot of fun - I also recommend this. On a side note...pictured below are a couple of the old Victorian houses that are characteristic of the Pacific Heights district. Apparently the one in the middle sold in 2003 (or thereabouts) for $1.9 million. Housing in San Francisco is expensive!
After the Ghost Hunt, we headed home for some sleep to prepare for an exciting day down south. Saturday morning we woke up and headed down to Santa Clara for the knitting convention. We spent hours (and a lot of money) on yarn. It was a knitter's dream. :)
After the convention, we drove to San Jose to do a quick tour of the Winchester Mystery House. This had been on my mom's list of things to do since I first moved out here. The house is really neat - the woman who lived there was nuts and spent tons of money making odd additions to the house, like stairs that go nowhere, windows in the floor, and doors that open to thin air. The tour was highly commercialized but it was still interesting to hear the history of the house and see all the old architecture.
It's hard to see, but if you look closely you can see a white door on the second floor of the house - it's almost hidden by a tree. That is the Door to Nowhere, which opens from the second floor to the outside but has no balcony or stairs or anything attached. If you walk out you fall down.
I think that's about it for exciting things we did over the weekend. I think we spent the rest of the time knitting and watching TV. Knitting is fun.
